The Great Roofing Debate: Shingles vs Metal

I've installed hundreds of both asphalt and metal roofs. When I sit down at the kitchen table with a homeowner, the "shingle vs. metal" debate always comes up. It's a big investment, and I want you to make the choice that feels right for your family and your wallet.

The Case for Metal

I love installing standing seam metal roofs. Once they are locked in, they are virtually impenetrable. A good metal roof will easily outlast my time in this industryβ€”we're talking 40 to 70 years. If you live in a high-wind area or a place prone to massive hailstorms, metal is a fortress.

However, it requires specialized tools and a highly trained crew to install it correctly. That's why the labor and materials will cost you 2 to 3 times as much as an asphalt roof.

The Case for Asphalt

There is a reason 80% of American homes have asphalt shingles. Modern architectural shingles are beautiful, highly durable, and very cost-effective. With the GAF Master Elite and CertainTeed systems that I install, you are getting 50-year non-prorated material warranties. For most of my clients, a premium architectural shingle is the sweet spot of aesthetics, protection, and value.
